Urban Leadership Institute
Company Overview
Urban Leadership Institute (ULI) is a social enterprise based in
Baltimore, Maryland. ULI focuses on leadership development by providing
management, consultation services, program development, research,
and market analysis.
Urban Leadership Institute empowers
youth and adults to create and launch their own enterprises, and
through these enterprises, to take greater responsibility for their
lives and communities. We lead a growing global liberation movement
of youth and adults who are committed to making a positive difference
and playing an instrumental role in the welfare of their communities.
We are initiating a change in the role of youth in society, and
are challenging traditional perceptions of young people as they
take the initiative to improve their own lives and those of their
communities by launching ventures of their own design.
History
The Urban Leadership Institute (ULI)
was established in 1999 in Baltimore, Maryland, when two teachers,
LaMarr Darnell Shields and David Miller in the words of Fannie Lou
Hammer were, “sick and tired of being sick and tired”.
This was a response to a growing concern about the plight of urban
youth. Both educators have lost several students to senseless violence.
Therefore, ULI is dedicated to contributing to better futures for
all youth. We share with many the conviction that too many children
and youth are at the risk of poor outcomes because opportunities
are too few, too fragmented, too problem-focused, and too distant
from school, family and neighborhoods.
Since ULI's inception, various writers and journalist
throughout the country have written articles talking about the awesome
work that ULI has done while working with urban youth.
